Damnatio Memoriae

2016

marble, steel, hydraulic and electric system

Arcangelo Sassolino’s damnatio memoriae takes its name from the Roman practice of erasing traitors from history. A diamond sander spins at 2900 rpm, slowly erasing a marble torso and turning form into dust. As the sculpture disappears, it questions the permanence of monuments and the truth of historical narratives. Referencing industrial force and human fragility, the work explores memory, identity, and the limits of what defines our shared humanity.
